Solar Heating for Swimming Pools
Rainbow Renewables can help you to install or just design a solar thermal system for your swimming pool/ jacuzzi and specify the correct equpment for the pool size and location. Whether it is a domestic or commercial swimming pool Rainbow Renewables can offer equipment to suite at competitive prices.

Swimming pools are an ideal application for the use of Solar Thermal Heating because you will generally use your swimming pool most in the summer when the power that can be obtained from the sun's radiation is at it's maximum. Swimming pool heating costs are typically high due to the large volumes of water involved and the latent heat properties of water. Once your swimming pool is up to temperature your boiler can be switched off throughout the summer and the solar collectors will maintain the water temperature in your swimming pool.
Swimming Pool Solar Benefits:
- Save pounds on your swimming pool heating costs
- Unwanted heat can be diverted to your domestic hot water system
- Extend the season by keeping your swimming pool warmer for longer
- Reduce your carbon emissions
- Certified equipment and excellent after sales support
The sun can provide all the heat required for a swimming pool, no matter how large. Vacuum tube collectors are highly efficient when used with swimming pools because the temperatures needed are lower than needed for domestic hot water, and this optimises their performance.
The solar heating for the pool can also be used to heat the domestic hot water provided the pool is near enough to the house. This means most of the hot water needed throughout the year can be provided by one solar system, which results in a much faster payback period.
How does the system work?
Daylight is absorbed by the absorber coating within the vacuum tubes. This coating transfers heat to the heat pipe. The heat is carried to the tip (condenser) and then to the solar fluid passing through the collector manifold. This is circulated through insulated pipes and subsequently released via a heat exchanger or a coil within a Rainbow heat store or solar cylinder.
What type of system will I need?
Whether you are heating a jacuzzi or a large swimming pool the type of equipment you will require is the same, only the size and capacity of the system will vary with each installation. A typical swimming pool or jacuzzi system will include:
- An array of solar collectors made up of a varying amount of evacuated heat pipes
- A heat exchanger posistioned in line with your pool circulation pump to transfer the heat from the solar fluid to the pool water
- An integrated solar pump station and controller to regulate the output from your solar thermal system
- An expansion vessel to prevent the system overheating
- A Rainbow heat store or cylinder if the domestic hot water is to be heated by the same solar thermal system.

How can my swimming pool solar heating heat my domestic hot water too?
The system will include a Rainbow heat store or solar cylinder and be set up to heat this store first, to supply the domestic hot water demand and then an automatic valve will divert the heat to your swimming pool heat exchanger. Ideally there will be a short run between the solar collector array, the heat store/ cylinder and the swimming pool heat exchanger.
